Described by the vendor as a mechanically excellent ‘driver’, this car is a fine example of Aston Martin’s legendary DB4. First introduced in 1958, the DB4 represented significant advances for Aston Martin. This elegant Granturismo was clothed in elegant, sporting coachwork that used Carrozzeria Touring’s innovative ‘Superleggera’ (‘Superlight’) system consisting of a multi-tubular structure supporting the aluminum-alloy body panels. Powered by an all-new 3.7-liter twin-overhead-camshaft inline ‘six’, the DB4 was a sophisticated yet understated Grand Tourer capable of carrying four adults in reasonable comfort at up to 140mph. This particular car is a right-hand drive example incorporating the advances introduced on the Series 2 version (chassis numbers ‘DB4/251-600’ inclusive) in January 1960. These included a front-hinged bonnet, radiator blind, bigger front brake calipers and an enlarged sump. A matching numbers car, ‘DB4/527/R’ was originally sold in the United Kingdom under the registration ‘XNJ 998’ (as confirmed in the AMOC Register) and was owned by one A E Sanders until 1984. Already restored (at date unknown) the car was recently imported from Japan where it had resided since 1986. Owned in Japan by an Aston Martin mechanic, it is reported as in excellent mechanical condition, driving extremely well with regulation oil pressure, good gearbox and brakes, and no smoke. The motor is said to sound very strong and has that fantastic, carbureted inline-six growl. Unfortunately, very little documentation came with this car when it was imported; nevertheless, we encourage the closest of inspections. Cosmetically, ‘DB4/527/R’ makes a strong impression. It is finished in a non-original but extremely attractive metallic grey that suits it admirably and is complemented by a black leather interior. The chrome is generally very good, although the finish on the bumpers shows a little deterioration. The remainder is very good to excellent, and the wire wheels are especially outstanding. All glass and lenses are excellent. The interior presents itself very nicely: dashboard, gauges and steering wheel are excellent, while the carpets were recently renewed in grey wool and are exceptional. The leather upholstery is generally very nice, as is the headliner and rear parcel shelf, both of which have been re-covered in a suede-like material. The engine compartment appears to be correct and is presentable, but not detailed. This Aston Martin DB4 represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a usable example of a classic British sports car that is enjoying a degree of appreciation like few others. This example runs and drives superbly and is also very attractive, yet is not too nice to use regularly. Offered with State of California Certificate of Title.
