1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Lot Number217 RegistrationOBV 453H Chassis Number11304422012171 Engine Number13098022007677 Odometer reading90,000 miles ResultSold - £76,160 Print details Send this to a friend Contact us 10 more images Original UK supplied RHD example Privately owned and entered Desirable 280 automatic example The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production until February 1971. An all new design by Paul Bracq to replace the 190 SL and 300 SL Roaster. The 280 SL had a powerful 2.8 litre version of Mercedes inline-six and used Bosch fuel injection. To save on weight the bonnet, boot lid and tonneau cover were all composed of aluminium. The nickname 'Pagoda' was quickly adopted thanks to the slightly concave roof on the optional removable hardtop that resembled a pagoda roof. The comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful disc brakes and radial tyres gave the W113 superb handling for its time. These roadsters also have one of the most beautiful bodies produced in the 1960s. Thanks to their robust inline-six and their luxurious Mercedes interior, they are wonderful cars to be driven and enjoyed. The styling of the front paid homage to the legendary 300 SL with its characteristic upright Bosch ‘fishbowl’ headlights and simple chrome grille, dominated by the large three-pointed star in the nose panel. First registered on the 25th March 1970, this desirable larger engine 280 SL Pagoda with the fabulous automatic gearbox which was ahead of its time in the 70’s has been owned by our vendor for the past five years and for 10 years by the owner before him. This has been a well-cared for SL and garaged when not enjoying the British sunshine, accompanied by the hardtop this example was treated in 2018 to a new mohair hood and shorty after all new walnut woodwork surround to the dashboard. Prior to our vendors ownership the car we are informed had the gearbox reconditioned and of recent has been cared for by Mercedes-Benz specialists Autoclass in Milton Keynes. Our vendor stated that "short of a fully restored example they to do not come much better". A very well priced Pagoda in the best combination with the larger engine and sublime Mercedes-Benz-engineered automatic gearbox, coupled to an original UK car in iconic silver coachwork and blue interior.
