The SL improved through the years with technical innovation but still managed to keep its fundamental character and identity of an upmarket, quality sports car. Volume production of the first SL started in April 1971 alongside the last of the W113 cars. The genius soft top mechanism which folds down out of sight under a panel ahead of the boot lid gave the car a beautifully sleek, uncluttered appearance. This example, offered in metallic blue over a contrasting cream leather trim interior, is presented in good order throughout. Remaining garaged through the winter months, the paintwork, which was chosen at the vendor’s request when restored by Automo in Berkshire, shows little sign of age with good chrome work displayed across this plucky 280 SL. In recent years Colin Ferns of Richmond has cared for the SL and performed a service in September 2018, less than 400 miles ago, and before March this year a new fuel pump was replaced with official Mercedes parts specified. Within the service booklet we can find 21 service stamps alongside the invoice for the recent service in 2018 and it is worth noting that when restored in 2016 a gearbox and engine service were performed. The hardtop is also presented well and fits the body and front screen as it should, a foldable hardtop stand and toolkit can be found in the boot and the soft top which is rarely used is new. Offered with the car is a good history file with multiple MoT certificates, invoices, and book pack alongside a UK V5C registration document and an MoT test certificate valid until March 2021, found with no advisories. We are told the fluids are changed annually in line with the MoT and the vendor states the cars starts ‘on the button’ every time.
