1985 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster Restoration Lot Number194 RegistrationB89 SDG Chassis NumberWDB1070422A028374 Engine Number11099022008945 ResultSold - £11,440 Print details Send this to a friend Contact us 13 more images The Mercedes-Benz SL (Sport Leicht) has been in production since 1954 with perhaps the most influential model being the W113 Pagoda of 1963. This second generation evolved from the 230SL to 250SL, finally becoming the 280SL. The W113 was replaced by the W107 in 1971 and as the engines became larger, the bodywork and weight of the cars also increased, as so often happens in mid-life! The SL improved through the years with technical innovation but still managed to keep its fundamental character and identity of an up-market, high quality sports car. Its reputation went from strength to strength, and it was rare to see an episode of Dallas or Dynasty in the 1980's without an SL making a star appearance. The genius soft-top mechanism which folds down out of sight under a panel ahead of the boot lid gave the car a beautifully sleek, uncluttered appearance. Of all the engine offerings the 280 remains the most sought after with the smaller 2.8 litre engine offering plenty of power but with the advantage of less weight and this improved handling. This original right hand drive automatic 280 R107 SL was registered 24th May 1985, with just three owners from new and the previous owner having owned it for 17 years in total. In March this year the car was completely stripped to bare metal and the vendor begun what was intended to be a full body restoration. The shell which is in ‘as new’ order, is finished in a metallic blue with a dark blue soft top and sits on Mexican Hat alloy wheels and comes with the original smoky grey interior. The engine running gear is still in the vehicle and fully running. There are receipts from the SL Shop for new ignition leads and plugs, injectors and associated parts, fuel pump relay. We are informed all parts are available as per the photos and is believed that every part removed is supplied with the car and can be collected locally post auction. Being offered to the market due to a change in the vendor’s circumstances, part finished to a very good standard, this example would represent an ideal winter project to complete what has become a very popular classic roadster with prices having risen significantly for the R107 over the past 18 months.
