A fine scale model of the America's Cup defender Columbia of 1871 Wm. E. & C. Hitchcock (American, 20th century) A very fine, museum quality, model in 3/8": 1' scale with the hull built up in wood with copper painted bottom, black topsides and a gold cove stripe. At the bottom of the model is the drop centerboard which is partially lowered. At the bow of the model is an eagle figurehead and ancanthus decoration on the stem. The deck is planked and pinned and is fitted in numerous details which include: anchors, anchor windlass, anchor chain, coils of line companionways, skylights, deck plates, ships boats on deck with davits, pin and fife rails, cockpit with binnacle and ship's wheel, wheel house, traveller bars, and other details. The model is schooner rigged with two masts, bowsprit, standing and running rigging, turning blocks, deadeyes, booms, gaffs, topping lifts, halyards and sheets. The model is fitted with a full suit of linen sails which have the panel seams sewn in, the edges seized, reef lines and other details. The model is flying the burgees of the New York Yacht Club, an owners pennant, and the American yacht ensign. The model is mounted on a pair of stainless posts in a brass framed glass case with a mahogany base. 64 x 17¼ x 57 in. (162.6 x 43.8 x 144.8 cm.) cased dimensions. Model built ca. 2000.
