Autograph letter signed to Prince Rupert ('Nepueu'), 'Ragland' [Raglan Castle], 11 July 1645, ½ page, folio (integral leaf removed, light dampstains, splits in horizontal folds, professionally repaired). The King makes urgent arrangements for his departure from Raglan Castle, referring to the infantry with Sir Barnard Asheley, which he hopes will have gone over, and proposing to pass at Black Rock the following Tuesday. Charles Garat [Gerrard] left me either 4: or 6: peeces of Ordinance at Cardife w[hi]ch I have com[m]and to be caried to Bristol'. Bristol was captured by Rupert for the King in 1643, and was now of the greatest importance to the Royalists as the only major seaport remaining in their hands. While Charles was the guest of the Marquess of Worcester at Raglan castle, General Fairfax was outside Bridgwater and his presence caused the King to postpone his plan to take his army south-west over the Bristol Channel with the 12 boats he had stored at Cardiff. A few days after the present letter Fairfax took Bridgwater by storm.
