CRUIKSHANK'S BEDROOM CABINET. An English provincial oak cupboard, 19th century,in two parts, the upper section with thumb-molded cornice over a mirrored door opening to an arrangement of eight pigeonholes and four sliding trays, the lower section with a door enclosing three sliding trays, one side fitted with a base cupboard, raised on a molded plinth base. Height 2140 mm, width 572 mm, depth 405 mm. Provenance: Wilfred Partington (purchased 1922 London sale); Charles Eade (the Bleak House Museum, Broadstairs; sold at Sotheby's 15th July 1999, lot 229). A fascinating piece of literary furniture. Cruikshank's bedroom cabinet would have held his private papers and books, and the mirror on the outside would have helped him dress. An autograph note by Partington, mounted and framed below a large Cruikshank signature dated June 15, 1861 and with a clipping from the catalog of the 1922 auction from which he acquired the cabinet, reads in part, The little door at the bottom left-hand side was for the withdrawal and replacing of a "pot de chamber" without opening the front door— relic of the days of the "three bottle men.". The cabinet resided at the Bleak House Museum, Broadstairs, for many years after been installed there by the museum's proprietor, the journalist Charles Eade, who acquired this piece from Partington.
