JAN PREISLER (1872–1918) RIDING IN STROMOVKA PARK Starting price: 1 800 000 CZK (66 667 EUR) Hammer price: 3 500 000 CZK (129 630 EUR) Description dimensions: 49 x 69,5 cm (h x w) period: Around 1908, Bohemia, Prague This hitherto unknown work is the recently discovered work of Jan Preisler the founder of modern Czech painting. The scene seems to unfold on two levels: the first depicts a carriage with two ladies and a coachman pulled by a dapple grey horse, while the second comprises the landscape of the park, which features a painting style similar to Preisler's 1908 paintings Yellow Landscape and Green Landscape. Profesor Wittlich categorizes the painting up for auction here among the studies Preisler painted after 1905, when he sought new direction after completing his extensive Black Lake series of paintings. Paintings by Paul Gauguin whom Preisler had the chance to see in Paris in 1906, proved an important source of inspiration in this search and provided Preisler with lessons about color modulation and color fields. The work comes from the important collection of Ladislav Souček, MD. Oil on canvas, unsigned, original frame by Jindřich Eck. Expert assessment: Professor Petr Wittlich, Color analysis: Michal Pech.
