Half titles, one folding engraved plate. (Lightly spotted throughout, stronger in first half and last few leaves of vol. V, a few leaves lightly browned or lightly waterstained.) Contemporary calf gilt, gilt armorial with the motto of the Trinity College, Cambridge "Virtus, Vera, Nobilitas" on covers, marbled edges (rebacked, old spines of vols. I-IV partly relaid, extremities rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance : Alexander John Ellis, Trinity College Cambridge, 26 December 1835 (ownership inscription on endpaper in vol. I) -- "From the Library of the late J. W. Sharpe Esq, sometime Fellow of Gonville & Caius College -- Presented to Gonville & Caius College by Mr Sharpe, 1918" (inscription on emdpaper in vol. I) -- Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge (bookplate). Mixed edition, second edition of volumes I-II, FIRST EDITION of volumes III-V. Mécanique céleste is Laplace's most famous work. "In it he made a comprehensive attempt to carry out the principles laid down by Newton. This is the foundation of modern theoretical astronomy. It deals with the general theory of the movements of the celestial bodies and gives an historical survey of the theories of celestial mechanics" (Sparrow).
