NEGRI, Cesare, called 'il Trombone' (ca.1536-1604 or later). Nuove invenzioni di balli, opera vaghissima... divisa in tre' trattati. Milan: Girolamo Bordone, 1604. 2° (313 x 213mm). Collation: π 1 * 4 ( *1) A-Z, Aa-Bb 6 + 2 . 'Prima Parte' description on p.182 pasted on. Engraved title vignette, full-page portrait of the author aged 66, 58 full-page illustrations each with integral decorative border, all by Leon Pallavicino after Giovanni Mauro Rovere (Giovanni Rossetti detto il Fiamminghino), the text with some integral staves of music. (Some light browning.) 18th-century vellum, spine gilt. First edition, second issue of this rare work, IMPORTANT FOR THE HISTORY OF MILAN, DANCE AND COSTUME. The beautiful illustrations show figures demonstrating various dance steps and incidentally reproduce with great accuracy the Milanese costume of the time. The music describes various pieces for the lute, to be played as an accompaniment to the dancing. The work as a whole is a Milanese production: the author, printer, artist and engraver are all local and the first part of the text includes a description of a number of fêtes and balls given in Milan and lists the ladies and gentlemen who took part. Negri's date of birth is given as ?c.1546 by Grove, but the legend beneath the portrait (engraved for the 1602 issue) gives his age as 66; he can therefore have been born no later than 1536. Little is known of his life: he was ballet master to the court of Milan and published Le gratie d'Amore in 1602, and the above work, a re-issue with a new title-page, in 1604. Neither issue is listed as having appeared at auction recently: a copy of the 1602 issue was last sold in May 1970, and this 1604 issue last sold in July 1936. Cicognara 1725; Brunet IV.34 "rares et assez recherchés".
