SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM. Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies...The second Impression. London: by Tho[mas] Cotes for Robert Allot 1632. Folio, 317 x 205 mm. (12 1/2 x 8 1/8 in.), red morocco, covers gilt panelled, spine gilt in seven compartments, board edges and turn-ins gilt, g.e., by Riviere, inner hinges split, small chip to tail of spine, lower fly-leaf creased; two-part pull-off black morocco case (a trifle rubbed); "To the Reader" leaf and title leaf heavily restored, both resized, engraved portrait with disfiguring ink facsimile work, last leaf remargined catching rule border, repairs to lower inner margin of fols. A3-4, repaired tears to D2 and H5, repair at inner margin of oo2v causing loss to 4 or 5 words, small holes to D4, I6, S5, and x1, each catching 1 or 2 letters, slightly larger filled holes to dd5 and hh1, scattered small marginal repairs, a few entering rule borders, a few rule borders shaved, first few leaves foxed, some mostly moderate soiling and staining . SECOND FOLIO EDITION, third issue of the title (Todd IIIa), "Effigies" page (A5r) in Smith's state A (Todd's issue II), title with engraved portrait by Martin Droeshout woodcut initials and head-pieces. The unsigned "Epitaph on the admirable Dramaticke Poet W. Shakespeare" on A5r is John Milton's first published work. Greg III, 1113-1116; Pforzheimer 906; STC 22274a; William B. Todd, "The Issues and States of the Second Folio and Milton's Epitaph," Studies in Bibliography 5 (1953), pp. 81-108.
