C’est dans ce contexte académique qu’il reçoit à 23 ans une bourse pour s’installer en France. A cause d’une santé fragile, il ne reste pas à Paris mais élit domicile dans le sud à Saint Paul de Vence. D’abord connu pour sa sculpture, Vu Cao Dam s’avère être un excellent peintre, ses lignes s’étirent à l’infini, sa touche est délicate et rapide, ses couleurs diluées et fraiches. Il a un attrait particulier pour les scènes de genre, il souhaite représenter la vie quotidienne et faire rayonner la culture vietnamienne. Pourtant il est très curieux de l’art moderne occidental, et l’on peut retrouver dans sa peinture une forte influence de Marc Chagall Particulièrement dans cette oeuvre où les tons bleus dominent. Un couple et un jeune enfant sont vêtus à la façon vietnamienne et semblent évanescents dans une nature stylisée par des touches de couleurs, épaisses. Cette oeuvre est très représentative du travail de Vu Cao Dam par le choix de cette thématique intimiste. Il parvient à saisir les liens familiaux avec beaucoup de délicatesse et de pudeur. Vu Cao Dam was a Vietnamese artist born in 1908 into a large Catholic family. With support from his highly Francophile parents, he entered the Hanoi Fine Arts School founded by Victor Tardieu. In this academic context, he received a grant at the age of 23 enabling him to move to France. Because of his fragile health, he did not stay in Paris but went to live in Saint Paul de Vence in the south of France. Initially acclaimed for his sculpture, Vu Cao Dam proved to be an excellent painter, with his endless lines, subtle, rapid touch and fresh, transparent colours. He had a particular penchant for genre scenes, and was keen to depict daily life and disseminate knowledge of Vietnamese culture. Yet he remained extremely curious about modern Western art, and his work strongly reflects the influence of Marc Chagall especially in this work dominated by shades of blue. A couple and a young child in typical Vietnamese clothing seem to blend into a nature stylised by touches of thick colour. The piece is highly representative of Vu Cao Dam’s work in the choice of this intimist subject, where he conveys the family ties with considerable delicacy and propriety.
