Mobilisé en 1914, comme nombre de ses amis cubistes, Albert Gleizes est envoyé dans une caserne de Toul, en Lorraine, à proximité de la ligne de front. Soutenu par un médecin militaire, le major Lambert dont il fera un important portrait (présent à New-York, Guggenheim Museum), Gleizes continue de dessiner et de peindre mais les conditions de travail sont altérées par ces obligations militaires. Très vite réformé, grace à l'aide de sa future épouse Juliette Roche il part à New York. Cette ville sera un bouleversement de couleurs, de sonorités et de vivacité.
Notre tableau a été entrepris à Toul selon les préceptes du cubisme qu'il a théorisé avec Metzinger puis achevé peu de temps après en 1915 à New-York, date de son arrivée. Tel un hommage à cette ville fortifiée menacée par les Allemands mais imprenable de par la vision que nous en fait l'artiste, Gleizes la fait tourbillonner avec sérénité et lui rend ses couleurs que la guerre a estompées. Cette œuvre est vibrante et rythmée par des formes géométriques superposées qui nous laisse entrevoir une évolution de son style vers l'abstraction. Cette composition spectaculaire est représentative de l'œuvre que l'artiste a créée durant cette période mais c'est aussi un témoin rare de la vie personnelle et artistique d'un des pères fondateurs du cubisme.
Mobilized in 1914, like many of his Cubist friends, Albert Gleizes was sent to a barracks in Toul, Lorraine, near the front line. Supported by a military doctor, Major Lambert, of whom he would paint an important portrait (now at the Guggenheim Museum in New York), Gleizes continued to draw and paint, but his working conditions were altered by his military obligations. He was soon reformed, thanks to the help of his future wife Juliette Roche and left for New York. This city will be an upheaval of colors, sounds and vivacity.
Our painting was undertaken in Toul according to the precepts of cubism that he theorized with Metzinger and then completed shortly thereafter in 1915 in New York when he arrived. As a tribute to this fortified city threatened by the Germans but impregnable by the vision that the artist gives us, Gleizes makes it swirl with serenity and gives it back its colors that the war has faded. This work is vibrant and rhythmic by superimposed geometric forms that let us glimpse an evolution of his style towards abstraction. This spectacular composition is representative of the work the artist created during this period but it is also a rare witness to the personal and artistic life of one of the founding fathers of cubism.
