Icônes absolues, ils condensent la main d'un artiste, contiennent l'esprit d'une époque, sont la signature d'une civilisation. Si l'appuie-nuque que nous présentons ici, ne peut «résumer» l'Afrique aux cultures si variées, il marque néanmoins de son empreinte l'âme commune aux arts de cette région. Christiane Falgayrettes, à propos de l'objet-estampille de la Fondation Dapper, écrit: Les appuis-tête présentent parfois des formes épurées qui semblent venir du fond de la mémoire humaine, révélant le corps de l'homme dans sa plénitude première. Son image apparaît furtivement ou s'ébauche à peine comme dans les oeuvres shona et mfinu; la composition en plans simplifiés, géométriques, et l'élimination de tout détail superflu permettent la synthèse des éléments qui fondent visuellement la métaphore. Peu de sculpteurs ont été capables d'amener, comme pour ces oeuvres, les formes à un tel degré de stylisation sans perte de vitalité dans la structure générale. (In. Supports de rêves, page 55, à propos de l'appuie-nuque Mfinu Dapper reproduit page 59) Se singularisant par le traitement des parties latérales de l'assise, et l'inscription de clous tapissier sur la base, notre appuie-tête Mfinu est en outre marqué par une patine chaude d'un brun rouge brillant qui invite autant la main que la rêverie. L'auteur précise que quelques groupes Teke s'établirent parmi les Mfinu, ce qui pourrait laisser penser que ce type d'oeuvre, à l'influence Teke notable, aurait été sculpté par l'un des leurs. These absolute icons summarise an artist's skill, contain the spirit of an era and the signature of a civilisation. Although the neck rest shown here cannot "sum up" Africa, with all its varied cultures, it still leaves its imprint on the spirit shared by the arts on the continent. Christiane Falgayrettes, writing about the stamped object in the Dapper Foundation, said: Head rests sometimes contain pure lines that seem to emerge from the depths of human memory, revealing mankind's body in its earliest fullness. Its image appears fleetingly or is barely sketched out, like in shona and mfinu works; the composition is simple, with geometric planes and the elimination of all superfluous detail leading to the synthesis of elements that are the visual basis of the metaphor. Few sculptors have been able to achieve, as in these works, such a degree of stylisation without sacrificing the vitality in the general structure (Supports de rêves, page 55, on the Mfinu Dapper neck rest reproduced on page 59). Standing out through the treatment of the sides at the bottom and the inscription with upholsterer's nails on the base, our Mfinu head rest also has a warm bright brown-red patina - an invitation both to pick it up and to dream.
