Philip II, king of Spain (1527-98), Carta Executoria de Hidalguia in favour of Rodrigo Ortiz de Abezia, in Spanish, illuminated manuscript on vellum 46 leaves, 304mm. by 220mm., complete, collation: i38, ii8, ruled in red ink, written space 200mm. by 120mm., 36 lines in black ink in a rounded Gothic hand, twenty-two large 3-line initials in liquid gold on blue grounds with the rest of the incipits in liquid gold on red panels, large miniature (90mm. by 85mm.) on fol. 2r, of Saint James on horseback with raised sword, the heads of the Moors strewn on the ground below, with full border frame of liquid gold and silver scrolling foliage on burgundy-red grounds with a large jewel inset, and naked drolleries with elaborate acanthus-leaves sprays and a ladybird on dull gold grounds in the bas-de-page, very large miniature (140mm. by 132mm.,) on fol. 1v, of Rodrigo Ortiz and his wife, kneeling in a grassy landscape beneath the Virgin and Child who appear in the heavens above, above the arms being granted and with full border frame as above enclosing a jewel and a small cabochon containing a portrait of St. Peter, endorsements at ends, 8-page endorsement dated 1634 at end, some cockling and wear and occasional flakes of paint missing from first few leaves, loose in original limp vellum binding with remains of two vellum ties
