Autograph letter signed "F. B. d'Arblay" to her nephew Rev. Charles Parr Burney.
London]: 11 October 1813. 3pp., folded sheet (225 x 180 mm). Postscripts on the address leaf, postmarked. Provenance : unnamed owner, Sotheby's London, 21 July 1983, lot 229, £770, Quaritch. A fine letter on the education of her son Alexander, beginning: "A thousand thanks to you, Dear Charles, for all your kind care, instructions, injunctions, & counsels, to my Alexander. I can diffiantly wish him better than to appreciate & profit from them. What is untoward in him, & his pursuits, I do not attribute wholly to perversity: his early scrapes, & the Glory flaming from them, in his years of adolescence, inflamed an ambition that pressed him, I am now of opinion, to an application too forcible & ardent for his physical fabric, & by overstretching his powers, has now slackened their elasticity…" Partially published in Letters and Journals , VII:724A (dating the letter 9 October 1813 in error).
