(6 1/8 x 3 1/2 in.), janséniste red morocco, covers and spines panelled in blind, blue morocco doublures with large gilt dentelle, blue moiré silk endleaves, edges marbled and gilt, by LORTIC, some very slight scuffing to corners and extremities of spine, lacking errata leaf in vol. 2, small marginal repair to H3 in vol. 3, washed and pressed . THE AUTHORITATIVE EDITION of the complete Fables , FIRST EDITION of vols. 3-5, third edition of vols. 1-2, first issue, with the engraved arms of the Dauphin on title and the other points called for by Rochambeau, vol. 3-5 in the corrected state, with the cancels listed by Rochambeau, vol. 5 the first of three 1694 editions, with the pp. 186 and 176 paginated twice; each fable with an engraved vignette by François Chauveau or Nicolas Guérard woodcut head- and tail-pieces and ornamental initials. The only edition printed under La Fontaine's direction, containing numerous substantive corrections (cf. Rochambeau 5 for the uncorrected state of vols. 3-5) . Of the 146 fables included in vols. 3-5, 109 were never previously published. Brunet III, 751; Rochambeau 14 (vols. 1-2), 15 (vols. 3-4), and 5 (vol. 5); Tchemerzine III, pp. 870-71.
