LAMOIGNON, Chrétien-François (II) de, Marquis de Basville (1735-1789) – Catalogue des livres de la bibliothèque de feu M. de Lamoignon . Paris: Merigot jeune, 1791. 2 (of 3) volumes, 8°-in-4s (200 x 121mm). (lacking third vol. published in 1792 and without 40pp. of manuscripts sometimes found at the end of vol. II, occasional variable browning and spotting, some minor worming in the text to vol. I from gathering Qq to end, minor marginal worming at beginning of vol. II through to gathering N, adhesion to last 2 leaves in vol. II.) Contemporary mottled calf, red edges (rebacked and recornered). Provenance : James Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford and 9th Earl of Balcarres (1847-1913, Bibliotheca Lindesiana armorial bookplate).

Provenance : SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (pencilled note on front pastedown that this is the Phillipps copy bought from the Robinson brothers). The catalogue of the Lamoignon library, begun by Guillaume I de Lamoignon (1617-1677) and continued by several generations of the family. It was greatly enhanced by the addition of Nicolas-René Berryer's library, which the family acquired through inheritance. Consisting of autographs, manuscripts, fine bindings, prints, and maps, the library was acquired en bloc by Thomas Payne who issued the priced catalogue included in the present lot.
