PALERMO 1738 -- LA PLACA, Pietro.
Palermo: Antonino Epiro, 1739. 4 o (199 x 149 mm). 9 engraved folding plates by ANTONIO BOVA, BERNARDO BONGIOVANNI and FRANCESCO CICHÉ after NICOLO PALMA (a few plates with tears patched on versos with some occasional minor loss, minor glue stains). (Some minor marginal spotting.) Contemporary limp vellum (front hinge cracked). Provenance : Biblioteca Natoli (bookplate with shelfmarks). This book describes the 1738 wedding celebration in Palermo of CHARL ES VII (1716-1788), King of Naples and Sicily, and MARIA AMALIA (1724-1760), Princess of Saxony. Charles was the first son from the second marriage of Philip V to Elizabeth Farnese of Parma. Upon the death of his half-brother Ferdinand VI of Spain on August 10, 1759, he became CHARLES III King of Spain. As King, his foreign policy was marked by the alliance with France (the Family Compacts) and the conflict with Britain over the control of the American possessions. His support for France in the close of the Seven Years' War led to the loss of Florida to the British, although this was partly compensated by the acquisition of the French Louisiana. The rivalry with Britain also led him to support the American revolutionaries in their War of Independence despite his misgivings about the example it would set for the Spanish Colonies. Berlin 3074 (calling for 8 plates); Watanabe 672 (8 plates).
