La première ligne du titre a été reprise
Jouée pour la première fois le 17 novembre 1667 dans l'appartement de la Reine par les comédiens de l'Hôtel de Bourgogne, Andromaque connut un grand succès tant par sa perfection classique que par le jeu des acteurs. Pour l'occasion, Racine détacha de la troupe la meilleure actrice et amie intime de Molière, Mlle Du Parc, beauté superbe dont il fit sa maîtresse ; il est même très probable que la pièce ait été écrite pour elle. Très rare, l’édition originale d'Andromaque présente des passages qui furent supprimés ou modifiés par la suite. Elle est partagée entre trois éditeurs. Le privilège, daté du 28 décembre 1667, fut accordé pour une durée de cinq ans à Racine, qui le céda à Théodore Girard ; on trouve parfois aussi les noms de Thomas Jolly ou de Claude Barbin, avec lesquels Girard partagea le privilège.
