illuminated manuscript on vellum. (380 x 265 mm). 135 leaves. Collation: 1-7(in 8s); 8 (in 7, lacking i); 9-17 (in 8s). Early foliation in lower right corner. Double columns of 30 lines written in a fine rounded gothic bookhand, ruled in red, some catchwords, rubrics in red, justification: 240 x 164mm. Illuminated initial ‘M’ at the commencement of Matthew in burnished gold infilled with blue penwork, the three following gospels with large opening intials in red with blue penwork, numerous two-line initials of alternating red or blue with penwork of the other color on the infill, text capitals touched yellow. Original brown Spanish morocco divided by double and triple fillets into frames and central compartment with crosses and diamonds, outer frame stamped with knot-work, 10 later brass bosses, vellum pastedowns. Condition: some leaves darkened, other washed and rubbed in some areas, mainly to the verticals, occasional soiling; spine and extremities lightly rubbed, clasps lacking. a very attractive manuscript of the gospels produced in spain in the reign of charles v. A colophon dates the manuscript at 1543.
