STAËL-HOLSTEIN, Anne-Louise-Germaine, Baronne de (1766-1817). Six autograph letters signed ('Necker de Staël' and 'M[adam]e de Staël'), to Madame de Montray, n.p. [Pisa], n.d. [January/February 1816], and Florence, 26 March 1816, and two autograph notes to 'Mr de Lascy' [the Revd. Thomas Lacy], n.p., n.d. [1816], together 6½ pages, 8vo and 2¼ pages, 4to (slight discolouration and wear, tear in 2nd leaf of letter of 26.3.1816, the letters mounted on card); with 2 letters by Albertine de Staël to Madame de Montray, one (in 3rd person) by Madame de Staël's father, Jacques Necker, and 3 by Madame Necker, all to Mr Clarkson, Paris, 1789 and n.d; a duplicate of the marriage certificate of Albertine de Staël and Victor, Duc de Broglie, signed by Thomas de Lacy, Archdeacon of Meath, Pisa, 20 February 1816, and 5 other items. Madame de Staël, accompanied by her daughter Albertine, August Schlegel and her companion John Rocca, made her last visit to Italy during the winter of 1 15/16. She remained at Pisa for Albertine's marriage, celebrated according to both Roman Catholic and Protestant rites, then went to Florence. In both cities she moved chiefly in English circles. One letter written at Pisa announces the time of the wedding, while the others refer to a doctor who will visit Madame de Montray's daughter, to the reported illness of mutual friends, to plans to call, and Mr de Rocca's health, also inviting Lacy to visit her and mentioning books from Galignani. From Florence she writes of the superiority of English medicine, her faith in hemlock, aconite and digitalis, and the importance of treatment for pulmonary infections.
