Beschreibung:

L'Office de la Semaine Sainte, selon le Messel & Breuiaire Romain , translated by M. de Marolles. Paris: la Compagnie des Libraires, 1662. 8° (187 x 120mm). Roman and italic type, double column. Pages ruled in red. 4 engravings in the text and 7 etchings by Jacques Callot inserted. (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary French red morocco gilt, sides with the arms of Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche [Olivier 2506, fer 1] at centre on a semé of her crowned cipher alternating with a fleur-de-lis, marbled pastedowns, g.e. Provenance : Marie-Thérèse of Austria (1638-1683), queen of Louis XIV (binding); "Bernard" on title (17th-century); Hans Fürstenberg (booklabel). A splendid royal binding from the library of Marie-Thérèse, queen of Louis XIV. It is possible that this book was bound by Pierre Rocolet, one of the Compagnie des Libraires . Esmerian (II, p.47) identified him as binding for Mazarin and other French noblemen and women, and connected him with the shop of Antoine Padeloup, but his activity as a binder has been questioned in the Walters Art Gallery, The History of Bookbinding (no.395, a binding for Anne of Austria). The plates which are inserted are from Callot's small Passion series. He had begun a large Passion series in 1618 but never completed more than 7 subjects before abandoning the large, horizontal format for the small vertical format in 1624. Interestingly, another copy of the 1662 L'Office , bound for Anne of Austria, Marie-Thérèse's aunt and mother-in-law, also contained inserted plates from this series (Aboussouan sale, Sotheby's 18 June 1993, lot 127). Lieure, Callot , 537.
