Half title, title printed in red and black with printer’s ornament (some leaves supplied in manuscript as detailed below, occasional very light mainly marginal spotting and staining). 20th-century black morocco by Peuser, spine gilt in compartments, top edges gilt, others uncut, original printed wrappers bound in. Provenance : Biblioteca de Ricardo Olivera (stamps on upper wrapper and label on rear pastedown); contemporary report, from “Courrier de Paris”, 22 August 1857, of the tribunal’s decision and later cutting tipped in near the front. FIRST EDITION, with Clouzot’s issue points: “Feurs” in running title on pp. 31 and 108; p.45 misnumbered 44, and the rear wrapper in the second state listing “Les Fleurs du Mal” amongst the advertisements. The six ‘condamnées’ have been excised from pp. [52]-53; [73]-74; [91]-93; [187]-190; [191-195] and [206]-207, and supplied in manuscript by an early owner who signs himself “G.G.”. In an “Appendice”, the “Nouvelles Fleurs du Mal” of 1866 are listed in the same hand, in addition to the sonnet “Soleil Couché”. Bound in at the end are the printed pages with un-condemned poems which were unavoidably lost from the main body of the text so that the condemned poems could be re-instated in manuscript (ie. pp. [54]-51, [94], verso blank; pp. [208]-205).
