II: Monticelli took the world by storm in the nineteenth century with his colourful, thickly painted works and daring subjects. Using thick layers of paint he depicted fêtes galantes and fêtes champêtres, elegant companies in a festive setting where often love was at stake. The opera therefore was his main source of inspiration, full of intrigue and forbidden romance. The work by Monticelli exhibits a resemblance to the masterworks of the Baroque, but also contains a recognisable spontaneity.
